PROFICIENCY STANDARDS: California State Law requires students to meet established state standards in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Science in order to receive a high school diploma. Further more, beginning with the graduating class of 2004, students will also be required to pass a high school exit exam that will demonstrate the proficiency of a high school education. The class of 2006 will be required to complete a senior project as part of their social science curriculum. As well as complete 60 hours of Community Service.

Parents and student will be kept informed of the progress of the student in meeting these requirements. Remediation is required of students not meeting the required standards.

*Any class required for graduation that is not passed will be required to be made-up the following year or during a summer school. (i.e. If you fail Freshman English--it must be made up in the Sophomore year or in Summer School)

EARNED CREDITS: Students may earn High School credits prior to entering the 9th grade if they have prior administrative approval and the class is held during the regular school day on the High School campus.

APPLYING CREDITS: Student credits are applied using the following semester calendar. Please note that a student must be consecutively enrolled at point of transfer in order to receive full semester credit.

18-day increments
1st & 2nd - No transfer grade will be posted.
3rd & 4th - Merge transfer grades and partial credit may apply.
5th - Merge transfer grades and partial credit may apply.

Transfer students who enter during the last 10 days of a semester, credit cannot be earned.
NOTE: Students entering Coalinga High School from a non-accredited school may not have earned credits from those schools transferred. This decision will be made after careful evaluation from the counseling office and administrative approval.

REPEATED CLASSES: Certain classes could be repeated due to student's grade and/or teacher recommendation and credit could be received for the repeated class if there is one letter grade improvement. These classes include foreign language, mathematics and laboratory science.

GRADUATION FROM COALINGA HIGH SCHOOL

Subject: Graduation Requirements/Participation in Graduation Ceremony

The Governing Board desires to prepare each student to obtain a diploma of high school graduation in order to provide students with opportunities for postsecondary education and/or employment.

Course Requirements

To obtain a diploma of graduation from high school, students shall complete at least the following courses in grades 9 through 12, with each course being one year unless otherwise specified: (Education Code 51224.3)

  1. Four courses of English
  2. Three courses in mathematics

Beginning in the 2003-04 school year, at least one mathematics course, or a combination of two mathematics courses, shall meet or exceed state academic content standards for Algebra I. If any student completes coursework in grades 9 through 12 that meets or exceeds state academic content standards for algebra, those courses shall apply toward satisfying this mathematics requirement. (Education Code 51224.5)

  1. Two courses in science including integrated science I & II or biological and physical sciences
  2. Three courses in social studies, including United States history, world history,; a one-semester course in American government and civics; and a one-semester course in economics
  3. Two courses in visual or performing arts, foreign language or American Sign Language
  4. Two courses in physical education, unless the student has been exempted pursuant to Education Code 51241
  5. Two vocational education courses
  6. Sixty (60) hours of community service learning experience shall be required for high school graduation beginning with the class of 2007

Pursuant to Education Code 51225.3, the Board may prescribe additional coursework requirements. If the Board does so, such courses/requirements should be listed below.

  1. Successful completion of an additional 70 semester credits in addition to specified course requirements for a minimum requirement of 250 completed semester credits.

Because the prescribed course of study may not accommodate the needs of some students, the Board shall provide alternative means for the completion of prescribed courses in accordance with law.

Subject: Graduation Requirements/Participation in Graduation Ceremony

Exit Exam for the Classes of 2005-2006 and Later

Beginning in the 2005-06 school year, each student completing grade 12 shall have successfully passed the state exit examination in language arts and mathematics as a condition for obtaining a diploma of graduation. (Education Code 60851)

Supplemental instruction shall be offered to any student who does not demonstrate “sufficient progress” as defined in Board policy, toward passing the exit examination. (Education Code 37252, 60851)

Participation in Graduation Ceremony

Recognizing that the high school graduation ceremony is an extra curricular activity the Board shall require students to meet or exceed the standards listed below to qualify for participation in the high school graduation ceremony.

  1. Successful completion of the Course Requirements and an additional 70 semester credits that will calculate to 250 semester credits
  2. Students will maintain a ninety percent attendance rate during each of the four years enrolled in high school
  3. The graduates of 2005-06 must maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or better for the second semester of 2006 or have a cumulative 2.0 G.P.A. or better for the first seven semesters in high school
    1. The graduates of 2006-07 must have a cumulative 2.0 G.P.A. or better for their final three semesters
    2. The graduates of 2007-08 must have a cumulative 2.0 G.P.A. or better for their final five semesters
    3. The graduates of 2008-09 must have a cumulative 2.0 G.P.A. or better for their final seven semesters
    4. All graduates of 2009-10 and later must have a cumulative 2.0 G.P.A. or better for all eight semesters

The Board will establish supplemental programs that will assist students in meeting the requirements for participation in the high school graduation ceremony. These programs may include summer school, concurrent enrollment, Saturday School, and other means of additional student assistance.

REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN END OF THE YEAR SENIOR ACTIVITIES (Grad Night, Senior Trip, etc.)

Any senior with less than 215 credits at the beginning of the second semester may not be allowed to participate in certain end-of-the-year senior activities. Those activities could include Grad Night, Senior trips, and other activities designed for graduates. This decision will be an administrative decision prior to the activity.

JUNIOR/SENIOR INFORMATION

  1. Seniors are required to be enrolled 7 periods that will complete, Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Vocational Education, PE or Fine Arts/Foreign Language.
  2. Work Experience (students must qualify academically to be eligible for enrollment in the program based on semester grades)
    • 2 periods for Juniors and Seniors
    • Juniors must take work experience 7th or 6th & 7th periods
    • Seniors may take work experience 6th & 7th periods
  3. Assistance Classes
    • Seniors may take a combination for only 2 of the following classes NOT taking the same choice more than once:
      Elementary Intern, Office Practice, Teacher’s Assistant, Repro Assistant, Library Assistant and PE Tutorial.
    • Juniors may take a combination of only 2 of the following classes NOT taking the same choice more than once:
      Office Practice, Library Assistant and Repro Assistance.
    4. College Classes
    • College classes may only be taken during periods 6th & 7th
