Procedures - Students

All absences require a note to indicate reason for absence. Parents are requested to call the school before 10:00 a.m. when a student will be absent.

Notes will be turned in at the office each day before 7:55 a.m. or between 12:30 p.m. and 1:05 p.m. 1. Notes must contain:
  1. ID number
  2. First and last name of student
  3. Date(s) and period(s) of absence
  4. Reason for absence or doctor's note
  5. Parent signature

Students failing to submit a note to verify an absence will be designated as truant and assigned Saturday School. Student will be given three school days from the date of return to supply an absence note.

Students are encouraged to attend partial days when possible (i.e., if a student has a morning doctor's appointment he/she should attempt to return to school after the appointment.)

Attendance Policy for Graduation (90% Rule)

CHS will send home to parents, on a regular basis, reports regarding the attendance of their student, so that parents can accurately monitor both the attendance of their student and the accuracy of the attendance records in the office. When students have accumulated excessive absence, parents will also be sent a letter to remind them of the 90% Attendance Policy and the consequences of continued absences. In event a student falls below 90% attendance, parents will be sent a letter each month during 2nd semester..

To participate in the CHS commencement ceremonies, a student must have:

Maintained 90% attendance of the days enrolled at Coalinga High School. (A student cannot miss more than 18 days per year, or 126 periods per year).

A. Exceptions to the requirement:

  1. Illness verified with a doctor's note (If the illness is of a long-term nature, a doctor's excuse must be renewed each grading period, or upon request).
  2. Quarantine directed by a county or city health officer.
  3. Subpoena/Jury Duty
  4. Attending funeral services of a member of the pupil's immediate family (parents, grandparents, siblings).
    1. One (1) day in California.
    2. Three (3) days out of state
  5. School activity absences.
B. Make-up of Absences:
  1. Summer School attendance will be utilized for make-up for less than the 90% attendance in the previous year(s) of enrollment. Students who choose not to exercise this option, run the risk of being ineligible for participation in the commencement ceremony their senior year.
    1. All make-ups must have prior administrative approval.
    2. Students may make-up one day of absences for each day of summer school attendance when taking and completing 10 units in summer school, or may make-up a half day for each day for each day attended in summer school while completing 5 units of credit.
    3. Twenty-five days of attendance shall be the maximum granted for absence make-up in Summer School.

Procedures - Parents

  1. Encourage your student to attend classes regularly. When an absence is necessary, please have students attend partial days when possible (i.e., if a student has a morning doctor's appointment they should attempt to return to school after the appointment.)
  2. Contact the attendance secretary to indicate anticipated absences and/or unexpected absences.
  3. Always send a note to school with your student for all absences. The note must contain:
    1. a. ID number
    2. b. First and last name of student
    3. c. Date(s) and period(s) of absence
    4. d. Reason for absence or doctor's note
    5. e. Parent signature
  4. All absences not verified by a note or phone contact will be designated, as truant and Saturday School will be assigned. A student will be given three school days to supply a note.

It is important that everyone does his/her part to encourage good student attendance. Good attendance will help create better opportunities for learning and establish attendance behavior for future occupations.

Student Contract

Contracts can be picked up in the Attendance Office no less than two weeks prior to departure. Students may only be out on contract for 5 to 10 school days. 10 days is the maximum for a contract. Uncompleted contracts will result in 5 or 10 days absents. Uncompleted contracts will result in 5 to 10 days of unexcused absents. Uncompleted contracts will also make you ineligible for another contract the rest of the school year.
